31st August 2011: Lucie Thorne in Session / Playlist

Featured: Lucie Thorne - Bonfires In Silver City (Little Secret)

'Bonfires In Silver City' is the stunning new album from acclaimed Australian songwriter Lucie Thorne. Steeped in that striking spaciousness and sensuality for which Thorne's work has become so renowned. 'Bonfires In Silver City' encompasses a remarkable breadth of feeling and flavour and is an arrestingly assured collection from one of our finest song-poets.

Lucie's last album, 'Black Across The Field' (2009) garnered acclaim from leading critics, including being awarded 'Best Roots Album of 2009' by The Sydney Morning Herald, was short listed for the prestigious Australian Music Prize, and earned her a place as one of Australia's most distinctive contemporary songwriters. 'Bonfires in Silver City' is an exciting development from this remarkable musician who has clearly hit her stride.

Most of these songs were written whilst on the road, over the past two years of almost constant touring. Evocative songs brewed over this nomadic time, during which Lucie has only occasionally retreated back to her country cottage by the Tantawangalo Creek that she still calls home.

24th August 2011: Sand Pebbles / Playlist

Featured: Sand Pebbles - Dark Magic (dot dash)

Dark Magic is the Sand Pebbles fifth album and features contributions from Galaxie 500's Dean Wareham, Luna's Britta Phillips, Tim Holmes (Death In Vegas), Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized), and Malcom McDowell.

When Wes Holland joined the Sand Pebbles a couple of years ago at the age of 18, Andrew Tanner had just turned 50. The band quickly realised they ran a unique age gamut: a member born in each decade in the history of rock n' roll - 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Far from disowning this unique fact, they decided to use it to inform their next album.

The result,Dark Magic, speaks from many minds and many times. Hypnotic, cosmic, kinetic and freewheeling.

17th August 2011: The Driftwood Manor / Playlist

Featured: The Driftwood Manor - The Same Figure (Leaving) (Rusted Rail/Slow Loris)

Initially released as a limited edition CDR on French label Ruralfaune in March of 2010, Rusted Rail and Slow Loris are proud to announce the release of 'The Same Figure (Leaving)' by Irish avant-folk project The Driftwood Manor.

Recorded between October 2008 and May of 2009, the album took in a considerable cast of long-time collaborators, with Driftwood Manor lynchpin Eddie Keenan working closely with friends from across the spectrum of the Irish folk and underground scene. United Bible Studies students Gavin Prior, David Colohan and Vicky Langan all added their talents with Prior in particular working closely with Keenan and co-Producer Steve Fanagan to help shape the sound of the album.

The Driftwood Manor have crafted their own brand of warm and earthy music which weaves strands of apocalyptic appalachia, psychedelic folk and Irish trad into a rich sonic tapestry. This CD is housed in a hand-assembled and hand-stamped recycled card sleeve... lovely!!

10th August 2011: William Elliott Whitmore / Playlist

Featured: William Elliott Whitmore - Field Songs (Anti)

On his 2011 album 'Field Songs', Iowa troubadour William Elliott Whitmore documents a vanishing American landscape with all the heartfelt soul and quiet fury one could hope for.

"Heartland firebrand blows fuse, fights for truth" heralded Spin Magazine when describing Whitmore, who utilizes a powerful singing voice beyond his years and a stark dramatic sound rooted in bluegrass, blues and folk protest music. These songs vividly evoke a life of struggle, humble resilience and family bond inspired by life on his family's farm along the Mississippi River.

Whitmore has made a name for himself both within the punk movement, where his populism and sincerity resonate with alienated urban kids, and the roots community, where writers like Andy Downing in the Chicago Tribune have placed him within the "new pastoralism" of Bon Iver and the Fleet Foxes.

3rd August 2011: The Travelling Band / Playlist

Featured: The Travelling Band - Screaming Is Something (Cooking Vinyl)

The Travelling Band’s shimmering blend of cosmic-country-pop, understated psychedelia, vocal harmonies and nu-folk has made them one of the most talked about artists to emerge from the Manchester music scene.

Their debut 'Under The Pavement' blurred the folk/rock boundaries, delicately intertwining sensitive lyrics with accomplished folk vocals and jangly instrumental accompaniments to form "a tapestry of glittering whimsy”, however, their follow up album 'Screaming Is Something' demonstrates a giant leap forward for the band.

The album was recorded in a few different locations but most of the recording was done in a converted church called Kinclochspelve on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. It was so desolate and tranquil on Mull and that gave that session a real focus.

The result, which isn’t quite soul music, isn’t quite folk, isn’t quite pop, country or rock has made them one of the most talked about artists to emerge from the Manchester music scene - "If you consider the term Mancunian Americana to be an oxymoron try listening to the Travelling Band. Brilliant." Marc Riley BBC 6 Music.
