Featured: John Smith - Map Or Direction (SR)
Praised and encouraged by the legendary John Martyn and taken on tour by folk colossus Davy Graham, John Smith is an ordinary man with extraordinary abilities – a gift for sharp songwriting and prodigious guitar-playing – with experience to burn, and expectations to fulfill.
But even the men that guided his career wouldn't have expected a record like this – one that stays true to their sounds, but takes them and builds upon them, in the deep South. Recorded in the bayou, under bridges, in forests, and in motel bathrooms, Map Or Direction bristles with sensitive songs that tear emotions to their raw, ragged bones.
Already loved by musicians far away from the folk world, like Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Map Or Direction reveals the absolute power and passion of folk performance, and introduces the mainstream to an exceptional new voice. It also shows the world how it far John Smith's music can travel, and how many of us it can move.

The Soft Hills are the musical adventure of Garrett Hobba, Drew Dresman, Brittan Drake, Randall Skrasek, and Brett Massa, who have as much affinity for sweet melodies as they do for experimentation.
They casually draw influence from folk to psychedelic to ambient, literary and philosophical themes and as well as incorporating experiences from dreams and the extraterrestrial.
With a soft, psychedelic sound that brings to mind the lighter touch of the piano-heavy Radiohead, their uplifting melodies and a finely crafted blend of acoustic and electric guitars, The Soft Hills blend dreamy melodies and sublime harmonies wrapped around introspective lyrics and seductive, rich vocals…
The Soft Hills take inspiration from their environs, fusing the understated melancholy that runs through a city with so much rain and the fresh joy that comes with the sun after the clouds part.

11th August 2010: The Soundcarriers / Playlist
Featured: The Soundcarriers - Celeste (Melodic)
Last years debut album 'Harmonium', delivered a lush and spiked musical template, bringing to mind a number of similar musical cosmic travellers. But exactly where the Soundcarriers are really coming from is still in debate: Nottingham? The West Coast? Saturn? Their sound moves between all three places and it doesn't really matter where you land, the atmosphere is always perfect.
In Celeste we find a tighter, more focused group. The same authentic analog warmth pervades, but with the addition of new sounds, playful blips and bleeps, suggesting an extended musical canvas. The influence of jazz and Kosmische remains, floating merrily alongside space rock exploration and heavenly vocal harmonies... is this really 'retro-futurism'??... you decide...

4th August 2010: Jez Mead in Session / Playlist
Featured: Jez Mead
Jez Mead plays a raw, intense and hypnotic kinda folk blues. He is a well travelled journeyman and it is a quest that he invites the listener to explore with him.
He is deep and diverse in voice and word and his guitar style rises to whatever the song calls for. That can mean slapping it, tapping it, wringing it’s neck, caressing it, bending it, bashing it, tuning it weird, making it sway, swing, sing, strumming it, fingerpicking it, making it run, chasing it down and holding it gently to his heart. He can sing sweet about love gone wrong or hollar and scream about the plight of drug tested spiders.
There is a loyalty to the emotion of the song that creates the style. He bangs his foot on a wooden box too, if need be and he also has the odd pop notion.
